NEW DELHI: A unique out-of-the-box event is being organised by the Pune Kendra of All India Radio (AIR) for visually challenged persons on 25 October.

In connection with ‘World White Cane Day’, around 500 visually challenged persons will walk in a Rally from Shaniwarwada, which will culminate at Akashvani, Shivajinagar, Pune at 6pm.

These visually challenged persons, who are among the most dedicated listeners of radio, will be received by the top brass of Akashvani Pune at AIR premises, and will be presented by another special programme - an Orchestra by the visually challenged at the Auditorium of Akashvani.

The programme has been organised in coordination with National Federation of the Blind, Maharashtra and Lions Club of Pune, Aakanksha. AIR Pune Programme Executive Arun Solanki can be contacted for those who wish to participate or for any other information.

White Cane Safety Day is a national observance in the United States on 15 October since 1964. The date is set aside to celebrate the achievements of people who are blind or visually impaired and the important symbol of blindness and tool of independence, the white cane.

The mission is to educate the world about blindness and how the blind and visually impaired can live and work independently while giving back to their communities, to celebrate the abilities and successes achieved by blind people in a sighted world and to honor the many contributions being made by them.
